Birth Support

Shannon's aim is to empower you with the knowledge to confidently make decisions in labour and birth, and to help achieve a positive birthing experience. Whether you choose to birth at home or in hospital, she will be there with you. Though she won't be working in a medical role, her experience as a Registered Nurse is an asset to those navigating the medical model of birthing. In times of confusion or uncertainty, Shannon can help you understand the medical terminology, provide reassurance, and encourage you to advocate for yourself with your healthcare team.

Meeting with you in pregnancy is important to get to know each other so that Shannon can become a seamless part of your birthing team. This can start any time in your second or third trimester, whenever you are ready. Three informal catch ups will help Shannon learn the best ways to support you through your labour and birth and give her the opportunity to share her knowledge with you and your birth partner. She can assist you with making your birth plan, discuss the normal physiological birth process and share some relaxation techniques and breathing exercises.

If attending your birth, Shannon will go on call when you reach the start of your due period (38 weeks), and will be available 24/7 until your labour commences. When the time is right for you, she can meet you at home or in the hospital and will stay with you until your baby is born. Shannon will work with you to achieve an environment that makes you feel safe and calm, so that labour can progress naturally.

If you or your partner need support in the immediate hours after birth, Shannon will stay to help you. The birth support package also includes one postpartum visit once you are home to help you settle into life with your new baby or debrief your birth.
